Chapter One
Equal Hearts

“Kyle, you are no longer a virgin, what are you going to do next?” Triumphantly stated holding an imaginary microphone in front of his face.

“HOLY SHIT Ian! We have to get to class!” Kyle exclaimed with dreaded excitement.

Without words, our mirth, frivolity and fun ended at that instant. We shot up and off the bed, rinsed ourselves quickly in the shower simultaneously, dressed and flew out the door. The elevator was on the bottom floor. For half a second I pondered using the staircase behind the elevator, but as fate would have it, ‘Ding!’

“Pressing the ‘Lobby’ button repeatedly most definitely will make it move faster.” Spoken with a great appreciation for his excessive compulsive, over-achieving behavior, along with a little tongue-in-cheek mirth.

“Well, fuck, we are late!” Kyle expressed in that first day of school tone that just annoyed the hell out of me.

“Relax… It is the first day of school… If anything, the teacher will also be late.” I reassured Kyle, who only just then stopped pressing the lobby button, looked up at me and smiled.

‘Ding!’

“Thank God.” Kyle muttered incoherently as he made a mad dash out of the building and about twenty feet away from the building before he stopped suddenly.

I pushed my way through the closing doors and just saw him standing there dazed, unsure of what to say or do. I simply strolled casually up to him smiling devilishly, gave him a perfect kiss square on those sweet supple lips, and continued walking. He froze. He stayed staring at me motionless until I looked back at him.

“Come on rodeo cowboy, we have a class to get to.” Calmly beckoning him to snap out of it.

Kyle and I arrived at our very first Honors Humanities class. We were in fact about fifteen minutes late, but as I suspected, there were a gaggle of students down at the lecture podium interacting with the professor, others were straggling in late as well.

“See, I told you, relax…” Reassuring Kyle, gesturing him to a front row seat.

“Why do you want to way up sit here?” Kyle asked confused.

“So we can interact with the professor better. Look around, no one is sitting in the first three rows. They are scattered all over this auditorium, and those are the fringe students with meagre grades. I want to ace all the honors classes, don’t you?”

I suppose I never thought about it that way, but really, why?”

“So the teacher will know our names, and will interact with us, we will have to work less if we participate more.”

“Yea, I guess so. I never took an honors class before.”

“Stick with me, kid, you might go places.”

I know one place I gotta go.”

Where’s that?’

“I gotta pee!”

“Settle down. We are about to begin.”

“Gah!”

“Good morning class, and welcome to Honors Humanities. I do not really know why we are in an auditorium that holds 1,000, when we have less than a hundred in the class. But I guess that is the ‘way of the man,’ and a surefire way to exploit wasting resources by over-spending your tuition money.”

I stifled a chuckle which did not go unnoticed.

I nudged Kyle whispering, “I like this guy already.”

Professor Luke turned and looked directly into my eyes before speaking. As he spoke, I nudged Kyle again in a stifled whisper, “Shit, he heard me,” as I cowered down in my seat a little.

“My name is Gary Luke,” as he started pacing the front of the hall around the podium,” and just like Walt Disney, I stand down on formalities, and insist you call me Gary. If you should happen to call me Mr. Luke, well… That’s my father, and he ain’t around no more…” Holding his hands out to his side. “And if by chance you slip and call me ‘Professor Luke,’ for any reason,” stopping and scanning the auditorium, making eye contact with each student, pointing his finger sternly shaking, “I assure you I will take one full letter grade off your final grade. Not too many chances there to slip up.” He chuckled.

“You all have a copy of your textbook, ‘Common Cents’ yes?” Reaching to grab his copy from the podium, holding it up for the entire auditorium to see. “It isn’t a big book, in fact it is quite small.” He hesitated as if intentionally making dramatic pause. “But it is in fact how you use it that really matters.”

Most students understood and laughed at his joke.

“Well, that’s good. At least you have a sense of humor. We are off to a great start.” Placing the book down on his podium and resuming pacing around the front of the classroom while talking.

“I hope you didn’t expect Humanities, an Honors class as a matter of fact, to force you to read ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ by Jane Austen, or War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy…” Laughing at himself, “or ‘The Divine Comedy by Dante’ No… I like to keep it simple students, We are going to look at something far more tragic, relevant to our recent past, and required for our future…” Reaching out once again and holding his book up. “We are going to talk about everything you don’t already know, and reveal the truth that has been kept hidden from you all of your life.”

Nudging Kyle and whispering while our professor was turned facing the board and writing, “Duuuuude, he had me at ‘hello students’ and now this?”

He wrote the words Common Sense, and Thomas Paine, then drew an ‘x’ across the word sense, and replaced it by writing the word ‘cents’ above it.

“In this class my young padawans, we are going to speak our minds, speak freely, and reveal only the truth. There will be no lies, there will be no cover ups, and there will be no conspiracy.”

A student got up and as her seat bottom slammed upwards, the entire class stopped, turned around and watched her try to leave the room.

“And there will be no mutiny, and definitely no one will abandon their post,” his voice rising dramatically, “And just where are you going miss Lady?

She stopped and froze… As she turned around revealing a burden of heavy books, she spoke softly, “I think I am in the wrong class. I’m sorry.”

“Sit down. It is too late to apologize.” He dramatically gestured, as a pointed finger fiercely suggested she sit, which she complied instantly. “Yes, sit down, and maybe you will learn something with your parents hard earned tuition money.”

“The strength of the government is derived from the happiness of the governed” He shouted as he turned away.

“Who said that?” Looking and pointing directly at me.

Quivering in fear, I nudged Kyle and stuttered, “T-Thomas Paine?”

“Exactly! You are going to do well in this class.” He smiled satisfactorily as I rose even further down in my front row seat. Kyle oblivious to anything actually happening in class at this point. He was awake, but he was rather speechless so far.

Our profess… I mean Gary continued on talking all about the book, and then hovered in front of me once more asking almost directly, “What is the single most problem in the American society today?” Glaring around at each student eventually ending up staring me down.

I swiftly sat up and proudly professed in a single breath, “The American Debt, Government entitlements, uncontrollable illegal immigration, menial labor being paid cash, and they aren’t documented, so aren’t subject to taxation, mortgage rates, student loans, credit card debt…”

I seemed to have stopped time, and totally blew him away. He was speechless so I continued, “I mean it is all I ever hear on the media, non-stop, every day.”

“Good answer.” He pointed at me sternly, yet returned a smile. “Is he right?”

No one answered.

“Is he right?” He asked the classroom louder. “Okay. Okay, I see how it is. I have already graded this entire class. You…” He pointed to me. “You, what’s your name?”

“Uh, me? Um… Ian, sir.”

“Great. Ian sir, you have passed this class. And the rest of you,” pointing fingers all around the room, “do you realize this is an Honors Humanity class, and effectively, you have all already failed. I suggest you all carefully consider walking directly to the admissions office right now and dropping this class because if you can’t speak, or you don’t understand, or you simply choose to, or refuse to join in on any conversation, or debate your personal ideals, or have no interest in exercising your constitutional right to express yourself freely in this class, then drop this class now, and don’t show up tomorrow. Class Dismissed.”

The entire auditorium was frozen with fear.

Gary placed his book in his satchel, and pulled it from the podium, turned and walked out.

Still, no one moved. It was awe inspiring. I grabbed Kyle’s arm, pulled him from his seat, and walked briskly up the stairs and out of the building before speaking.

“That… Was… Awesome!” I turned and stopped Kyle’s momentum from walking further forward. He stopped in his tracks, “I don’t get it.”

“What don’t you get? He is a freaking genius.” Confidently stating fact, flailing my arms out to the side.

“He’s a certified nut case, if you ask me.” Kyle responded, darted around me, and continued walking. “I wanna go take a nap before practice. That class was exhausting.”

I caught up to him. “Exhausting? You didn’t even say a word. Don’t you see, that just interacting with him, and discussing whatever it is we are talking about, he learns our names, and our ideas, our opinions, and that is how we get graded.” Kyle just glanced at me like I was crazy or something. We kept walking towards the dorm.

“Seriously, an honors class is so much easier than a normal class. Like English. We have English tonight after practice, and I bet it is going to be totally the same.”

We arrived at our dorm and waited for the elevator. While waiting, I nudged Kyle and asked, “Hey who is that?”

“Dunno a leftover drunk from last night, couldn’t find his way home?”

“I didn’t see him there this morning when we left.”

“We were in a hurry. I didn’t see him either.”

“I wonder who he is.”

The elevator arrived. We entered, and were alone. Without notice, Kyle grabbed onto me and planted his lips on mine. When he released me, gasping for air, I licked my lips, “Unexpected, but welcomed. Exhausted ay?”

“Yea, well… We do have three hours until practice.” Waggling his eyebrows suggestively.

“Behave. I want to take a nap.”
